I kept seeing my sleep score bounce around and had no idea why. So instead of guessing, I ran a few small experiments in Trialist—each one a simple “did it / didn't do it”—and let my Apple Health sleep data settle the argument.
Three routines went under the microscope: kiwi before bed, caffeine timing, and late meals.
Kiwi before bed → more deep sleep
I made a binary experiment, tracked Deep Sleep and Awake Time, and logged “did it” on kiwi nights. After a couple of weeks the verdict was clear: on kiwi nights my deep sleep was up and I was barely waking during the night. Small habit, real signal.
Caffeine: it's the timing and the amount
This one needed more than yes/no, so I logged each coffee with an amount and a time. Trialist then found two breakpoints for me:
- A timing cutoff—caffeine within ~3 hours of my bedtime dragged my deep sleep down. Since I aim to sleep around 23:00, that means nothing after ~15:00.
- A dose ceiling—under a certain amount, my sleep held up. Above it, deep sleep dropped.

Now I have a personal rule instead of a vague “coffee is bad” feeling.
Late meals → nothing
I fully expected my last meal to matter. It didn't. The comparison came back flat—no meaningful change in my sleep metrics either way. A null result is still a result: one less thing to worry about.
The takeaway. I didn't need a lab. One habit at a time, a clear question, and my own health data doing the judging. Two things to keep, one to stop stressing about.
