For months my gut was unpredictable—some days fine, some days urgency and diarrhea out of nowhere. Nothing lined up, because I was looking at the same day. The culprit was actually hiding a day behind.

Just log both, plainly

I didn't overthink it. In Trialist I set up two kinds of Variables:

No health sensors involved. This is all self-reported, which is exactly what stuff like this needs.

Let the lag do the work

The key move was checking for a delay. Gut reactions don't always show up at dinner—they show up tomorrow.

Trialist compares a food against a symptom across a range of lags—same day, +1 day, +2, and so on. For me the pattern jumped out at ~24 hours: roughly a day after eating one specific food, the symptoms reliably followed. On days I didn't eat it, they didn't.

Trialist scans delays up to five days—so a next-day reaction can't hide behind “nothing happened at dinner.”

Change one thing, confirm it

I cut that food and kept logging. The symptom days faded out. That's the part I couldn't have gotten from a same-day gut feeling—the lag view is what made the connection visible.

The takeaway. If a symptom seems random, check whether it's trailing something by a day or two. Log the input, log the symptom, and look at the delay—the pattern is often there, just shifted in time.
